My new painting. “All the Views We Hold Dear Appear In Sets of Two or More.” 36″ x 54″, Acrylic and Collage on Canvas, 2019.

New painting, (Visit my Progress Album: http://bit.ly/2OlHJ13). I’ve been working to create new ideas and directions in my works. From my Work Sample Page:
“Bible pages were carefully organized into a horizontal and vertical grid by adhering them to the canvas with a toned gesso. Charcoal was attached to a three foot stick and, with a fully stretched arm, a series of looping and intersecting lines were created. Utilizing the stick and charcoal as the drawing tool allows for a guided but not completely controlled, guided by the drawing tool itself, technique for making marks. Primary colors of red and blue are the dominant hues with the gradations occurring in each of the shapes. The internal movement is framed by a textured blue border with a delicate light yellow line chasing throughout the entire freeform series of shapes in the center of the composition.”

Making LOTS of art helps is part of the process of making SUCCESSFUL art. I had a great conversation in the studio with Julie (my biggest supporter and wife) about the work I am creating. She appreciates it but prefers the flowers and plein air works. I appreciate her thoughts and opinions. I get it. As I look around the there is not a lot of the abstract work hanging. The ideas of color relationship, texture, mark making, and compositional movement as a focus of study doesn’t reveal itself to everyone. Even those who love us. Regardless, I have support. Below are 6 works in progress. 5 small acrylic on bible pages, one larger work on canvas. Enjoy.
I was contacted earlier in the month to participate in the celebration of the inclusion of Taliesin in the recent UNESCO inscription of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, and also are helping to promote Mineral Point’s Paint the Point event next month. The ONLINE publication is available today and the hard copies are going to be out soon at 190 various locations all around Southwestern, WI.

Recovery for All – 2019
My shoulder has been operated on and recovery is happening. A big thanks to Julie for helping out and taking care of me. Here’s my first painting and my large canvas waiting in my studio.
The lessons learned by working out in “these conditions” is a life long learning skill for the painters I get to work with. The cool air, crisp breeze, grey sky can help them learn that regardless of the weather – one needs to get out and paint.
During my time bringing Abby out to Washington DC, I was able to take a little bit of personal time wow others were getting ready to make a couple of paintings. My speed is a priority. “Library of Congress” was my first and “Pilar at Breakfast” was my second and what is probably the last from the trip is the Capitol Hill Hotel and Library of Congress.” Enjoy your portrait Pilar.
Necessarily Provisional (7″ x 7″, $350) and Holding onto a Specific View (35″ x 25″, $3370) are two new works. Both oil on canvas. Trying new ideas with a lot of texture (and getting back into the oils). Enjoy.
