On top of being an artist, being an educator offers me so many positives in life that I can hardly count. Even as we roll, trudge, slog, suffer, and survive through the Corona virus Pandemic, teaching young artists about how art positively affects their lives is a great part of my life. While we talk about the events of the world, we also look at the events of the past and how the arts have helped people through them. Works that were essential to the everyday (architecture of the Egyptians and middle east that gave a place to live and worship like the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut), to artifacts that told stories of war, peace, suffering and triumph (Bayeux Tapestry or Trajan’s Column) to works that were just too powerful to be out in public at the time of their creation (Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People). It is a great opportunity to share the past of our humanity with them.

Beyond the history – we also have to (and do most of the time) talk about and demonstrate the MAKING of art. Techniques, approaches, compositions, elements and principles. With that, one on my great joys is taking the time to work on projects along side of them – demonstrating the ideas and process of making art. This part of the job gives me the opportunity to show off (and practice) different skills of observation and making art not necessarily seen in the abstractions.
