Making Plans to Create an “One Week Painting”

Ok… This is a blog from another site of mine, but the amount of images is a A LOT to copy over… well… the gallery portion is. I took a moment to stop at the Art*Bar in Milwaukee to check out what the artist did on Sunday evening to work OVER my painting… it was AWESOME! There is still KORB painting left. Thank you!

Once a year, I get the opportunity to create a temporary artwork at the Art*Bar in Milwaukee, WI. The Art*Bar is exactly what it sounds like, a Bar that has no wall advertising for the adult beverages that it serves, but rather walls full of real, live, legitimate Art (with a capital A). To see MORE of my art and the PURCHASE MORE of my art (nudge nudge…) please visit frankkorb.com and get in tough with me through my e-mail there.

After September 11, 2001 occurred, and the world was still reeling from the shock, “Don Krause, then 42, took the event as a personal wake-up call and sought out a place to cultivate his Riverwest dream, to create a unique tavern. “I never told anyone what I was working on and I didn’t know when it was going to open,” says Krause. “I had never done anything like it before.”…

My Trip to Chicago

On Thursday, my daughter and I took the Metra from Fox Lake, IL to Chicago to do the sights. An hour and a half train trip to the city, a day and good portion of the night, and then the trip home (another hour and a half). Regardless of the time and expenses, we had a wonderful day. On top of that, we met some really neat individuals from Seattle, had drinks and some snacks, and some fun conversations. I only wish I had busted out my sketchbook at that point. Whatever… I did make 5 drawings during the day, 3 of which I managed to photograph and present here. Thanks to everyone I was able to draw, it was nice for you to knowingly, of unknowingly, pose. Enjoy.

Racine Co. Fair – En Plein Air Painting Contest 2010

Racine Co. Fair… Day 3. Today I participated in the first En Plein Air Painting contest. There were 5 first year entrants and we were given a canvas and 3 hours to complete our observations of the fair. I thought about what everyone sees when they come to the fair and what the most common, every-year, and, to me, iconic areas of the fair there were. The main entrance and Squires Hot Dog stand stood out to me. Here are pictures that Julie took of the First Year WINNER! $40 and a great 2′ x 4′ canvas and the honor of being the inaugural winner! Thanks to the Racine Co. Fair for putting on such a great idea. There were a lot of great conversations and questions by the fair goers and other artists who took place. Julie, thanks for taking the pictures and for the 4 hours of painting time. Thanks also to Toni for talking me into joining the fun!

Art Bar – August 9, 2009 – Abby and Me

Welcome to the Art Bar 2009 posting. I have been painting a canvas a year at Don Krause’s Art bar (located at 722 E. Burleigh St., Milwaukee WI. www.artbar-riverwest.com) for 6 years now, since the establishment opened. While I remember most of the paintings, I can only name five of them, maybe it was only 5 years. What began as an experiment for me, to see if I can get a 4′ x 5′ canvas painted in 8 hours (or less) has become a yearly outing. Some years have drawn many family and friends, some have even brought the news (fox 6 came one year) and I have even got the first year as a documentary film by (soon to be famous LA cinematographer?) Dustin Mellum. This was another great year form Abby and me, a painter’s eye view of the main “gallery” and bar at the Art Bar. Portraits have been my forte in the past, and while I will continue those as my prime genre, working from life was reborn for me over the summer. This was intended to be more in the lines of a figurative work, but the idea of the bar took the lead. Fortunately, people came in and filled the place so I could (with help from Abby and a fellow classmate from UWM – thanks for coming Diane) add in the figures and even make a guest appearance myself.

This painting will be displayed for the week of August 10 – 16, and then on the 16th will be either covered up or incorporated into the next artist’s vision. This has been such a great idea, thanks Don for the opportunity, that I have even incorporated it into the workings of my days at school. I have an Open Canvas at Waterford Union High School, just outside of my classroom. Please visit the site  to see what 15 – 18 years old artists come up with in a 5-8 hour period. (Open Canvas at WHS)

Another canvas done, another year over. I look forward to seeing the final year’s artworks at the artist reception in March. It is always a bit difficult to whitewash over the previous painting (not really), and it is really exciting to see the 8+ hours of work finished and then incorporated into the next week’s work. Thanks for visiting, don’t forget to stop in and see the painting and always, tip your waitresses. Thanks to everyone at the Art Bar for such a wonderful time, great pizza and a welcoming atmosphere. Please let me know your thoughts… I am ALWAYS looking for feedback.

Not new, but…

From the CAN website (http://www.cannyc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=177)

[T]he idea of poetry and the art is a great combination of the two… although neither of us has yet added the art tot he poetry. [I] tried a poetry/art with students (art club) in my high school (9 – 12 grade art classes) and got little response. Next year. It’s funny that it is something that is so easy to begin dealing with – poetry. Art too. Although, it seems intimidating from the outside, there has to be a muse to make it worthwhile. Ha! It is exactly the opposite. it can be from anything, everything, nothing at all. It is so open and so easy to get started with. That does not, however, make it all good… good and great take time, but it sure is fun.

“It’s so quiet in the house at 3:30 in the morning. The refrigerator and the sound of my pencil scritching over this page are about all I can hear. There’s a wind outside – but I don’t hear it over the din of the household. 62 degrees inside feels much cooler than 62 degrees outside at this time of year.”

Portrait in Charcoal and Gesso

Resting Woman in Charcoal and Gesso on Composite Board

When you take time to speed things up, the making of art becomes more fun. Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but I sue am enjoying the approach. The image (left) in charcoal and gesso was one of the first portraits of the term (week 3). We took some time during the second week in conte crayon (mine at least) but this one was different, emotion, depth, scale, value – all things seemed to work in this one. 4 days left (as of this posting) and I will be sad when it is all over and done. I regret not knowing the names of all my classmates (but that isn’t much different than my school year and all the students I have in class – my bad). Something to work for this week. All my “homework” is done (40 figure drawings and 10 masterpiece recreations) and my last 2 projects are in the bank too! The final project was a portrait based on the work of a current figurative artist – I chose Elizabeth Peyton. My take on it is my brother Scott. The third (of four) projects was a portrait in mixed media – I did four – overachiever that I am. Please visit the link at the top of this page to see more of the works. I am still working on the names of the pieces (a lot of time crunching the webpage) so please bear with me. Please, let me know your thoughts – I am looking forward to any comments you may have.

My Summer at UWM – Figure Drawing

Seated Nude

Seated Nude

Please take a look at more of the works I have been completing at UWM at the tab above… otherwise… I am having a GREAT time working with serious young artists and being back in a studio. The development of the figurative work is directing me in very different and far more spontaneous directions than my current portraits have led me. While I am still looking to the shape and form of the face, the figure is offering more and more challenges. For the time being, I am putting away the tightly rendered 15+ hour pencils drawings and concentrating on work a bit more loose yet still well developed. One solid week in, tons of drawings, lots of sketches and some master works recreated – it is good to be back in college! It is great to work directly with another professional practicing artist (Andy Fletcher) and the feedback from the rest of the class is being absorbed daily. i do hope that you take a look at some of the other works and please, enjoy!
